What Are the Attic Ventilation Requirements for Idaho Homes?

Idaho homes follow the International Residential Code, which requires one square foot of net free vent area for every 150 square feet of attic floor. That ratio drops to one square foot per 300 when a vapor retarder is installed on the warm side of the ceiling, or when 40 to 50 percent of the required vent area sits high in the attic and the rest sits low at the eaves. Dodd Roofing and Exteriors checks that split on every attic we inspect in the Treasure Valley, because where the air enters matters more than the total vent count.

What does Idaho code require for attic ventilation?

The state adopts the IRC with local amendments, so the 1/150 and 1/300 ratios apply in Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Caldwell, and the surrounding cities. Vent openings need corrosion resistant screening sized between 1/16 and 1/4 inch, and code calls for at least 1 inch of clear airspace between insulation and the roof sheathing at the eaves, which is the job of baffles. Your building department can confirm amendments before a permit is pulled on a roof replacement.

Why does intake and exhaust balance matter more than vent count?

An attic breathes by pulling cool air in at the soffits and pushing hot air out at the ridge. Add ridge vent without matching soffit intake and the ridge starts pulling air from the easiest path available, which is often the conditioned house below or a nearby box vent. The airflow short circuits and the middle of the attic stays stagnant. We size intake to equal or slightly exceed exhaust.

How does poor ventilation shorten shingle life here?

Summer attic temperatures climb far above outdoor air, and that heat cooks asphalt shingles from underneath. The mat dries out, granules loosen, and two identical roofs on the same street can end up years apart in remaining life. Manufacturers also tie material warranties to code compliant ventilation, so a starved attic can weaken a future claim. Our breakdown of how ventilation affects energy use and shingle lifespan goes deeper.

What are the signs an attic is not venting properly?

Look for rusted nail points poking through the sheathing, dark staining on the underside of the decking, insulation packed tight against the eaves, cupped shingles, and upstairs rooms that stay hot long after sunset. Winter condensation on the decking points to trapped moist air rather than a leak, and homeowners often call it in as one. A roof and attic inspection settles the question in one visit.

Can ventilation be corrected during a roof replacement?

That is the easiest time to fix it. The ridge is already open, so cutting a continuous ridge vent, installing baffles, and clearing blocked soffit intake add little labor compared to the same work later as a standalone project. If the soffits cannot be opened further, edge intake vents at the eave line are the usual answer.
