How to Find Where a Roof Leak Is Coming From

Roof leaks are sneaky. The water stain on your ceiling is almost never directly below the spot where water is getting in. Here is how to track down the real source.

Start in the attic

The attic is the best place to find a leak. On a rainy day, take a flashlight and look for active water, then trace it uphill along the rafters and decking to where it enters. Water stains, dark streaks, and damp insulation all point toward the source.

Common roof leak points

Most leaks start at a few predictable places: flashing around chimneys and walls, the valleys where two roof planes meet, the rubber boots around plumbing vents, skylights, and popped or backed-out nails. Aging or storm-lifted shingles open the door for all of these.

Why the stain inside is not the leak

Water that enters at the roof can travel several feet along a rafter or the underside of the decking before it drips through the ceiling. That is why chasing the leak from the inside stain alone usually fails, and why finding the true entry point matters.
