Do You Need a Permit to Replace a Roof in Idaho?

In most Treasure Valley cities, a full roof replacement requires a permit, and your roofing contractor should pull it, not you. Boise, Meridian, Nampa, and Caldwell each run their own permitting, requirements differ for tear offs versus overlays, and small repairs usually do not need one. If a contractor asks you to pull your own permit, treat that as a red flag.
Why the permit question matters
A permit means the city inspects the work, which protects you at resale and keeps your insurance clean. Unpermitted roof work can complicate a future claim and shows up in title work when you sell. The permit cost is small compared to the roof, and a legitimate contractor builds it into the quote.
