Why Are My Gutters Overflowing in the Treasure Valley?
Gutters overflow for four common reasons: they are clogged, they have lost their pitch, they do not have enough downspouts, or they are too small for the roof draining into them. In the Treasure Valley the most common cause is a clog from cottonwood fluff, pine needles, and fall leaves, followed by gutters that have sagged out of pitch after years of Idaho sun and winter ice. Is it a clog or a capacity problem?
Watch the gutter during a steady rain. If water pours over one spot, usually right above a downspout, the outlet or the elbow below it is plugged. If the whole run spills evenly along its length, the gutter is either too small or holding water because it is out of pitch. If it still overflows after cleaning, debris is not the problem. Why do gutters lose their pitch?
A gutter should drop about a quarter inch for every ten feet toward the downspout. Older spike and ferrule hangers work loose in the fascia after repeated summer expansion and winter ice weight, and the run sags. The low spot holds standing water, overflows first, and rots the fascia behind it. The fix is rehanging the gutter on hidden hangers screwed into the rafter tails, and replacing any fascia that has gone soft before the new hangers go in.
Are your gutters too small for your roof?
Most Treasure Valley homes have five inch K style gutters, which handle a typical roof fine. Problems start where a large or steep roof section, or a valley, dumps a lot of water into a short run. Six inch gutters carry roughly 40 percent more water, and adding a downspout every 30 to 40 feet of gutter often solves overflow without replacing anything. Can overflowing gutters damage your home?
Yes, and the damage is usually slow and hidden. Water sheeting down siding stains it and works behind trim. Water dumping at the foundation causes crawlspace moisture in Nampa and Caldwell and basement seepage in older Boise Bench homes. Rotted fascia and soffit follow within a few seasons.
