Why Are My Windows So Drafty in Fargo Winters?
Windows feel drafty in Fargo winters for one of four reasons: worn weatherstripping, a failed sash or frame seal, an uninsulated gap between the window and the wall framing, or cold glass creating a convection current that feels like moving air even when nothing is leaking. Is it a real air leak or just cold glass?
Hold a lit incense stick near the sash edges and the trim on a windy day. If the smoke flutters, air is getting through. If it stays still but you feel cold rolling off the glass, that is convection: warm room air hits the cold pane, drops, and slides across the floor. Convection points to a weak glass package. What causes air to leak around windows?
Weatherstripping hardens and cracks after years of minus twenty cycles, and sash locks loosen until they no longer pull the sash tight. Behind the trim, the gap between the frame and the rough opening was often stuffed with fiberglass or left empty in homes built before the 2000s. Vinyl frames also shrink slightly in deep cold, which opens hairline gaps at the corners.
Can drafty windows be fixed without replacing them?
Yes, when the glass itself is still sound. New weatherstripping, adjusted locks, exterior caulking, and low expansion foam in the gap behind the trim solve most air leaks for a fraction of replacement cost. They are worth trying first on a window under fifteen years old with clear glass.
When does a drafty window mean replacement?
Replace when the window is single pane, when fog or frost sits between the panes, when wood frames are soft or rotted, or when sashes will not lock at all. Windows account for roughly a quarter to a third of a typical home's heat loss, so a failed glass package costs you every month from November through March. Is it too late to replace windows before winter?
