Are Class 4 Impact Resistant Shingles Worth It in Fargo?

For most Fargo area homes, yes. Class 4 impact resistant shingles typically add 10 to 20 percent to a roof replacement, earn ongoing discounts from many insurers writing policies in hail country, and resist exactly the damage that ends roofs early here. On a typical FM metro roof, the discount plus the longer life usually pays back the upgrade.
What Class 4 actually means
Class 4 is the highest rating in the UL 2218 impact test, in which a 2 inch steel ball is dropped on the shingle twice in the same spot without the shingle cracking. That correlates directly with how a shingle handles the 1 to 2 inch hail the FM metro sees in a normal summer.
The insurance math
Many carriers offer premium discounts for documented Class 4 roofs. The catch to know: some policies pair the discount with cosmetic damage exclusions, meaning dents that do not break the shingle may not be claimable. We walk through your specific policy language before you choose, because the right answer depends on your carrier. Our post on roof insurance claims covers the claim side.
When it does not pencil out
If you are selling within a few years, the discount will not have time to repay the upgrade, and a standard architectural shingle keeps the quote lower. That is a fine choice too; it just deserves to be made with the numbers in front of you.
