Does Hail Damage a Metal Roof in North Dakota?

Yes, hail can damage a metal roof in North Dakota, but it usually dents the panels rather than punching through them. Most steel roofs in Fargo, West Fargo, Moorhead, and Horace come through one inch hail with cosmetic dimples and no leaks, while two inch stones can crush seams, chip the finish, and crack fasteners. Dodd Roofing and Exteriors inspects metal roofs after every major FM metro hail event, and the biggest surprise for owners is usually how their policy treats the dents.

What does hail damage look like on a metal roof?

Round dents in the flat part of each panel are the most common sign, easiest to see on thinner 26 and 29 gauge steel. Larger hail chips the paint and exposes bare steel that rusts over a few winters. Dented ridge caps, flattened standing seams, and cracked rubber washers on exposed fastener roofs matter more than dents in the pans.

Will hail dents make a metal roof leak?

On their own, no. A dented pan still sheds water. Leaks come from damage you have to look closely to find: split sealant at a seam, a cracked fastener head, a chipped coating that rusts through, or a flashing joint that hail loosened. Freeze thaw cycles in a Fargo winter turn those small openings into leaks by spring, the same pattern we cover in our post on roof flashing leaks.

Does insurance cover hail dents on a metal roof?

It depends on whether your policy has a cosmetic damage exclusion. Many North Dakota and Minnesota insurers add that endorsement to homes with metal roofs. With it in place, dents that do not affect how the roof works are not covered, and only functional damage like broken seams or fasteners qualifies. Without it, widespread denting can justify panel replacement. Check your declarations page for the word cosmetic before you file, and remember that a wind and hail percentage deductible still applies.

Should you file a claim after hail hits a metal roof?

Get a documented inspection first. We photograph dents per square, seams, fasteners, and accessories so the adjuster sees functional damage, not just dimples. If the roof only has cosmetic dents and your policy excludes them, filing adds a claim to your history for nothing. If seams or fasteners failed, or gutters and siding were hit too, a single storm damage claim is usually the right move.

Is a metal roof still worth it in hail country?

For most Fargo homeowners, yes. Many steel panels carry a Class 4 impact rating, which can earn an insurance discount, and a metal roof outlasts shingles by roughly double. Heavier 24 gauge panels with a textured finish hide hail far better than thin smooth pans, so panel choice matters as much as going metal. Our comparison of metal roofs and shingles in North Dakota covers the tradeoffs. To have a metal roof inspected after a storm, call Dodd Roofing and Exteriors at (701) 831-0710.
