Why Are My Gutters Pulling Away from the House in Fargo?

Gutters pull away from a house in Fargo for three main reasons: the weight of snow and ice overloads them, freeze and thaw cycles work the fasteners loose from the fascia, and the fascia board itself rots from trapped moisture. A sagging gutter never fixes itself, and every North Dakota winter widens the gap. Late summer is the right time to fix it, while the wood is dry and crews can still get on the roof edge.

Why is snow and ice so hard on gutters in North Dakota?

A gutter full of ice can weigh several times what it was designed to hold. When ice dams form at the roof edge, meltwater refreezes in the gutter and the whole run turns into a solid block that hangs on the fasteners for weeks. Our guide on preventing ice dams in Fargo explains why that ice forms in the first place.

Are gutter spikes or hidden hangers better?

Hidden hangers screwed into the fascia every two feet or less hold far better than the old spike and ferrule system. Spikes work loose a little more each winter as the metal expands and contracts. If your gutters are spiked, rehanging them on screwed hangers is one of the most affordable upgrades you can make before the snow flies.

Could rotten fascia be the real problem?

Often, yes. When gutters overflow or ice backs up under the shingle edge, water soaks the fascia board behind the gutter. Rotten wood will not hold any fastener, so new hangers pull right back out. The fix is replacing the damaged fascia, checking the drip edge, and then rehanging the gutter on solid wood.

Should you repair or replace sagging gutters?

If the runs are straight, the seams are tight, and the metal is not creased, rehanging and resealing is usually enough. If the gutters are bent from ice, pulling loose in several places, or undersized for your roof, seamless replacement makes more sense. Hail creases from summer storms may also belong in an insurance claim, and our team documents gutter and siding damage as part of every storm inspection.
